Rainbow Light School – Uyeasound Primary, Shetland

As the name suggests, the Rainbow Light School, provides a remarkably innovative and colourful educational provision that ignites the passions of its pupils.  Not only that, the diversity of ideas ‘connecting’ various educational needs of individual pupils to specific pedagogical strategies was practical, inspiring, but above all it demonstrated that it worked.   It also demonstrated good practice in terms of ‘connecting’ school provision with local traditions, language and culture.

Creativity in the playground was used to encourage physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well being.  The school transformed their playground with an explosion of colour around a rainbow theme.  This integrated project used curriculum flexibility to develop a cross-curricular approach to deliver national initiatives, and to gain health promoting school status.  Formative assessment was used throughout and progress recorded with digital photography.
