This discussion paper explores a range of questions about the nature and importance of creativity and the ways it can be nurtured in young people. In addressing various issues and questions, the paper seeks to be constructively critical, celebratory and challenging. It offers some answers without purporting to be either comprehensive or the 'last word'. The intention is that this short paper should be seen as a starter for serious and informed discussion in schools, local authorities, teacher education institutions and elsewhere.
The paper was launched at a joint IDES Network/LT Scotland conference on 26 November 2001 by Nicol Stephen MSP, Deputy Minister for Education, Europe and External Affairs.
A set of supporting case studies was also launched on 26 November 2001. These case studies of creativity in education are drawn from every sector of Scottish education, from nursery to further education.
