IDES - Building Learning Communities

IDES will examine how both primary and secondary sectors can effectively approach personalisation of education and will pursue the fundamental values of IDES by encouraging young people to help make their school a community of learning where all participants recognise they are learners and support each other to achieve excellence.

Key areas are:

  • environment for learning
  • choice of learning and teaching approaches
  • ways in which learning is organised.

Background

Within the new landscape created by Curriculum for Excellence, schools need to become ‘personalised’ in the sense that the individual learner will have a claim on the time and the assistance of both teacher and peers but has an obligation to make a positive contribution in return.

Effective learning requires the individual’s willing participation and acceptance of responsibility.

Personalised learning is, therefore, part of the process of establishing the school as a mutually supportive community of learners.

IDES will consider and take forward some of the thinking and ideas first set out in the paper 'Personalised Learning' developed by the Future Learning and Teaching (FLaT) reference group of Learning and Teaching Scotland. We wish to acknowledge their work on that paper and are grateful for the opportunity to build on it.
