ICT in Education

Alistair: I hope that by the end of this lesson the children will have fulfilled many outcomes - er - I've seen in schools, not just this school, but many schools - when a child is asked to do a little bit of work processing, it's to type out a long story. I wanted to go a bit further than this. I wanted to show the children how they could change the font, change the style, change the colour, change the size and put a frame round the document, as well as of course putting a - a photo into a document. So I'll keep my fingers crossed that we can all get this done.

This piece of work is cross-curricular. Er - first of all the children wrote their piece which they wanted to word process up. They wrote it in their jotters. That gives me a chance to correct it and make sure the spelling's correct, because I hope they won't put spelling mistakes into their - um - into their document.

I haven't shown them yet how to use a spell checker. That will be another lesson. But this time I wanted them to put in a finished piece of work into a document, and - so as regards that, it's a piece of language work. Er - basically, it's an ICT lesson. As regards ICT though they're using a photo, they're inserting a photo, and they're putting text to accompany a photo, and they're putting a frame round a document.

I hope that at the end of this all children will have - they will have a nice piece of work to put on the wall. Um - many children might feel very self-conscious about their writing or their handwriting, their style of handwriting, yet at the end of this every child is able to produce an attractive, cardinal piece of work that's as good as anybody else's.
