ICT in Education

Matt: The lesson today didn't go quite according to plan er, the children were a bit over-excited with all the activity that, that was going on, um, some didn't listen very closely to the instructions, but on reflection the, um, outcomes that we have back, most children did, er, achieve most of the outcomes. I think as a result of the exercise today, the children's skills using databases will certainly have increased, some by more than others. Some children had absolutely no problem in doing what I wanted them to do and they would achieve all the outcomes that I set for them, er, some others in a sort of middle group managed to achieve them probably halfway, a little more than that, er, some children still need quite a bit of, of help to do that.

Their calculation skills er, I was hoping really to let them see that they didn't have to do a lot of calculation on their own, that the computer could actually do that for them and er, there wouldn't be any mistakes, er, in it, that, and I do think that they achieved that today.

Pupil A: With these kinds of fields, you put like name and then you've got a field like text only and, and if you want to put a number in, you need to go to number or date.

Pupil B: I've learned that it keeps all the data ... when you write it down, instead of writing it in a book.

Matt: I had anticipated, er, when I gave out the list of er, kings and queens, er, I definitely did that far too early, er, some of the children then who were, can actually compiling the database, er, started putting in the names of the kings and queens instead of the name field for the database, so I think in future doing that, I would hold that back myself.

Also I think er, doing it again, um, I would probably compile it with them at the same time, the database, to make sure that er, they were all doing the same thing at the same time. Most did, but the few who didn't, er, needed your help right away.
