Matt: OK, this morning we're going to continue work we started er, two weeks ago on databases. Now remember when we started work on databases, we looked at the different kind of information you could put into a database and how it had to be organised. Remember we had, um, to decide on what the fields were going to be, what information we were going to collect and then we had to decide on what kind of field it was going to be. Can anybody tell me any kinds of fields that we had.
Narrator: Matt is going over some of the material from previous lessons. Then he introduces the pupils to a new concept, using calculation fields in a database.
Matt: And we're going to look at a different kind of field type today and we're going to look at this one here - calculation - because I don't want to sit and work out, I don't want to do lots of subtraction sums to work out how long somebody reigned for. I'm going to get the computer to do it itself. So I'm going to get it to do a calculation and if I click on create here, I'll get another box. Well, I want to calculate how long the time that the queen reigned for and I know when it started and when it ended, what kind of calculation am I going to have to do to do that?
Pupil A: Take away.
Matt: Take away or subtract. Subtract, what would I take away from the reign ended, do you think Kirsten?
Kirsten: Reign started.
Matt: Reign started, and click OK.
Narrator: The pupils are given worksheets with data to be entered. They work in pairs and request Matt's help when they need it. This encourages them to work collaboratively.
Matt: Right, does everyone have the database structure finished? Who hasn't got it finished yet, hands up if you haven't got it finished. Right, I'll come help you in a little second. When it's coming to save, we have to save as.
