The lesson: Video analysis of a basketball lesson

The lesson

While the pupils are getting changed and warming up, Mr Stanger sets up the equipment and sets the model performer video as the reference clip. This takes approximately ten minutes.

Next the pupils are introduced to the set shot through teacher demonstration and explanation and are asked to attempt it and begin to familiarise themselves with the shot.

Mr Stanger then explains to the whole group the video analysis task and how to operate the software with the remote control. He then demonstrates the task by leading the first pupil through recording another pupil’s performance and comparing it to that of the model performer on the computer. This takes approximately five minutes.

The class is then split into three groups and given separate tasks. Group One analyse the video clips. Group Two copy the model criteria for a set shot and the homework task into their jotters. (The homework task is to analyse their observation schedule to find strengths and weaknesses in the set shot and identify a specific aspect for improvement for the next lesson.) Finally Group Three carry out set shot practises and drills. The groups then rotate.

As the lesson progresses Mr Stanger moves around the groups to deal with questions and problems, though the majority of the time is spent working with the pupils carrying out the set shot practises and drills. This takes approximately 35 minutes. Pupils who finish all the tasks before the end of the lesson are allowed to start their homework.

At the end of the lesson Mr Stanger gathers round all the pupils to check that they have all managed to complete the video analysis task and reminds them of the homework task.
