Video analysis of a basketball lesson

Iain Stanger is a PE teacher at Banchory Academy. He is incorporating the use of the Dartfish Dart Trainer video analysis software into a 55-minute basketball lesson for a co-ed S3 Standard Grade PE class containing 26 pupils of mixed ability.

Teacher profile

Iain Stanger has been teaching for thirteen years and the last six have been at Banchory Academy as Principal Teacher.
Over the past four years Iain has developed a strong interest in the use of ICT to enhance and support lessons. He has attended numerous workshops and presentations on various aspects of software and hardware and has developed the PE Curriculum Support Group website for Aberdeenshire.

The use of ICT has expanded within the department in both core and certificate PE though the majority is used to support Standard Grade and Higher/Intermediate 2 PE.
Iain regularly uses Dartrainer to show clips of model performance and to allow pupils to analyse their performance. PowerPoint, some of the Birchfield software and the Internet are also used to support learning and teaching.

School profile

The school is in Banchory, 17 miles south west of Aberdeen. The town has grown rapidly over the past twenty years as a result of an influx of families brought to the area by the oil industry.

Banchory Academy is designed to accommodate 780 pupils but it exceeded this capacity many years ago and the roll has been growing steadily since the mid-nineties. The roll is currently 953 and there is significant pressure on accommodation in many areas of the school.
ICT provision in the school has improved greatly in recent years though there are still issues of access to the ICT suites with classes of more than 20. This should be alleviated with a new wireless infrastructure, new laptops and 2 x 16 laptop note-busses.
