Feedback: Flash animations to teach chemistry

Feedback

Mr Watson says there is no doubt that the pupils enjoyed the animations and found the concepts much easier to grasp. The highly visual aspects of Flash helped him to get over some potentially tricky ideas quickly and easily.

Amongst the advantages of creating an animated lesson using Flash is that many of the components used to create this lesson could be copied and used with very minor changes to teach atomic structure and electron arrangements to S3 classes.

Pupils’ comments

'It’s really cool being able to see the reaction and the atoms at the same time.'

'Now I understand where the electrons go.'

'Loved the electrons orbiting!'

What's next?

Mr Watson is keen to make contact with other teachers (particularly Chemistry) who are writing their own Flash animations with a view to sharing files and collaborating on future projects. If you are interested in discussing this further please e-mail gwatson@kelso.scotborders.sch.uk
