ICT in Education

Learning aims: Hillside Beatbox radio station

Learning aims

The learning outcomes for pupils over the year are to:

  • participate in a group discussion and write up a report which conveys ideas and conclusions
  • report on an event that they have attended
  • present a piece of practical work (from Art or Craft) using ICT
  • record a .wav audio file, edit and amend it, and convert it to an .mp3 audio file
  • access Hi-Fi audio from a web page
  • present a piece of work in a different way from usual (see Multiple Intelligences)

Using the MP3 player is highly motivating for the pupils as it gives them control over what is recorded. Mr Noble finds that, after using Audacity for a couple of hours, pupils become adept at editing and manipulating music and speech.

Pupils who produce ‘good copy’ are rewarded by seeing their work on the home page of the school intranet and on the World Wide Web. All pupils and staff are notified of a new story on the station by email. It enables pupils to see a tangible end result to their labour; one which can be archived.
