The seed for the current Music project, funded by Determined to Succeed, first began to germinate three years ago when the children of Castlefield and two other local schools - Greenhills and Crosshouse - developed soundscape music based around Italo Calvino’s Italian folktales with David Scott of the East Kilbride Art Centre. Moving on from this experience of working in a recording studio, the pupils from P4, P6 and P7 made their own Langley CD project for East Kilbride to celebrate Scottish music. This involved choosing four songs from Scottish 'indie' bands (Teenage Fanclub, BMX Bandits, Belle and Sebastian and Looper) that would have some resonance with the children lyrically. The children worked with their music teacher Barbara McKechnie and again with local musician David Scott to produce their own recordings of the songs chosen. Whilst they are working on this project, local people who have made it in the music industry have visited or are still to to visit the pupils to discuss their experiences with them. These include Francis McDonald from Shoeshine Records, Norman Blake from Teenage Fan Club, and Stevie Jackson from Belle and Sebastian.
