The activity: Creating a 'talking book'

The activity

The Microsoft PowerPoint talking storybook project evolved from circle time. Pupils have a circle time ‘friend’, Eeyore, and each pupil was given the opportunity to take Eeyore home for the day. The pupils were given the nursery's digital still camera and took photos of Eeyore having supper, Eeyore tucked up in bed and so on. These photographs became the basis of the PowerPoint talking storybook.

When the camera was returned after one of Eeyore’s adventures Ms Kennedy sits down with a laptop to work with one of the children in the class. The photos he has taken of Eeyore at home with him have already been downloaded onto the computer. They look at each photo in turn and discuss what to write underneath. Ms Kennedy lets each pupil have a go at typing in some words, helping them to find the letters on the keyboard.

Whilst this is going on two P6 pupils from the school are working at a computer with another child on the other side of the room. The captions to his photographs are already there and they are adding animations such as ‘flying in’ titles and revolving photos using Microsoft PowerPoint. They are also recording voice-overs that will speak the captions.

Finally, all the pupils gather around the new interactive whiteboard to see one of Eeyore’s stories. This process is repeated on a regular basis until all the stories are complete and all the children have had the opportunity of taking photographs and creating a talking book
