Purchasing a digital video camera

With so much choice available, deciding which digital video camera to buy can be a difficult task. Here are some points to consider before buying.

  • You will want a camera with DV input, which allows you to send your data to the computer, and a DV output, which allows you to send your edited footage back to the camera so that you can archive your finished work on tape.
  • Does it have Analogue Out? This allows you to link to a TV or projector.
  • Does it have Analogue In? This allows you to transfer footage from analogue material such as old VHS tapes onto your camera.
  • Does it have a headphone and microphone socket?
  • Do you want it to take still pictures?
  • The camera film (CCD) comes in various sizes and resolutions. The higher the resolution, the better the image.
  • Is it 'bottom loading'? If so, you will have to take the camera off the tripod to change the tape.
  • How easy is it to use?
  • How durable is it?
  • Does it come with video-editing software?
  • How much does it cost and is it good value for money?

Alternative options

There are different types of camcorders but the mini DV tape based camcorders are the most popular. An alternative digital video camera which is suitable for young children is the Digital Movie Creator 2 from TAG Learning. The camera provides an inexpensive way of bringing digital video into the classroom. It enables pupils to capture up to 6 minutes of high quality video and sound. The camera comes with video editing software and a teachers resource guide. Read about Sanday Nursery who created a winter wonderland clay animation using a Digital Movie camera.

Remember!

If you are going to be using a digital video camera in the classroom you will need to consider other accessories such as, a tripod, headphones, microphones, reflectors, spare batteries and cables such as a Firewire to connect the camera to your TV/computer (these may come with the camera).
