Male: That first half hour now because it’s well managed by the children themselves and the class teacher, that first twenty-first minutes they’re able to fit into the routine again. They’ve been at, been at school, but at a level that they’re actually enjoying. They’ve got their consoles out, they’re quite quiet, they’re concentrating on trying to do their best with it, and what we actually have found is that some of the behaviour, not all of the behaviour but the behaviour throughout the day it has got a lot better.
Female teacher: First thing in the morning, this is when we do it, we do it first thing in the morning when they come in, and I think the children are more settled. First thing in the morning it would be like a brain gem or, I don’t know, just like a different activity to do something with them to warm them up in the morning, like silent reading, something, but you would … I would never say I’ve seen that level of concentration and quiet and just they’re so busy, and they’re really into it, really into it. But it wasn’t like that before, before the Nintendos.
Male: You’ve been using the Dr Kawashima’s first thing in the morning for like 15, 20 minutes for the past 10 minutes.
Child: It gets your brain working.
Male: It gets your brain working. What have you noticed in the class? Has the class been quiet or …?
Child: Yeah.
Male: What do you think, tell me about the class?
Child (overspeaking): I think it’s been quieter.
Child (overspeaking): I think it been calmer and quieter.
Male: You think it’s been calmer and quieter?
Child: Yeah, there’s not …
Child: Yeah, there’s not that much fighting.
Child: That’s what I was just going to say.
Male: You were going to say that. So there’s not been a lot of arguing and bickering, the folk have been just getting on with their stuff.
Child: Yeah. There used to be lots of fights because everyone was arguing over the reading books and stuff.
Male: Ah ha. So for the first wee while in the morning are you finding the classes much more settled, is that what you’re saying?
Child: We used to (unclear) mutters.
Male: Has it had an effect on the class?
Child: It’s got a lot quieter because I used to remember reading a book or something people would be bored and start like talking to people and then … but while we’ve been with Nintendo they haven’t because they’ve been just concentrating more.
