View a text-only version of PDF files

A text-only version of a PDF file could be useful for one of the following reasons:

  • to allow you to access its content using assistive technologies (e.g. a screenreader)
    or
  • to edit the document for use with learners.

Unfortunately this facility, which is normally available free on the Adobe website, is not currently working.

Should you wish to re-use text or images from a PDF document to create classroom resources, then we suggest that you do the following.

Editing a PDF document:

  1. Ensure you have the most up-to-date version of Adobe Reader downloaded onto your computer.
Download the free Adobe Reader Get Acrobat Reader

  2. Open the PDF document.

    To copy text:

    - choose the 'select text' icon from the toolbar Adobe PDF select text icon

    - select the text you require

    - copy and paste it into a new Word document or into a word-processing package.

    To copy images:

    - choose the 'select image' icon from the toolbar Adobe PDF select image icon

    - select the image you require

    - copy and paste it into a Word document or into a word-processing package.

  3. Save the new document and edit as required.
