Help for PC users

If you are using a PC the best way to view the LTS Online Service is by using Internet Explorer 7.0 or Firefox 2.0.

You can see websites with earlier versions of these browsers but you may have some difficulties with the display. Upgrading your browser will give you the best results.

Screen display

The best screen size (resolution) to use with our websites is 1024 x 768 pixels

You can adjust your screen's resolution:

From the 'Start' menu (in the bottom left corner of the screen), choose 'Control Panel', then 'Display', then 'Settings' and follow the instructions there.

You can also increase (or decrease) the text size on pages by selecting 'View' and then 'Text size' from the menus at the top of the page.

Access keys

Most browsers support jumping to specific links by typing keys defined on the website.

Press 'Alt' and an access key, then 'Enter' to take you to that page.

All our pages use the following access keys:

  • Access key details: Access key 0

  • Help: Access key 6

  • Site map: Access key 3

  • Search: Access key 4

Downloading files

LTS currently provides downloadable files in the following formats:

  • Microsoft Word,

  • Microsoft Publisher,

  • Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF),

  • Claris/AppleWorks,

  • Rich Text Format (RTF),

  • compressed or 'zip' files,

  • Microsoft Excel,

  • PowerPoint

  • Access.

Depending on the speed of your internet connection, some of these files may take a while to download.

To save files on to your own computer, right click on the item and choose 'Save'.

Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF)
PDF allows you to reproduce the material on screen or on a printer exactly as it was prepared. To open PDF files, you need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer.

Download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader

Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer
The PowerPoint viewer allows you to view PowerPoint presentations even if you do not have the full version of Microsoft Office on your computer. If you have a full version of PowerPoint you can save the presentations on to your computer.

Compressed files
Compressed or 'zip' files usually have the file extension .zip. Many resources you download from the internet will be compressed to make the file smaller and thus quicker to download. You will need a programme such as Winzip, to decompress them.

You can can also get the files out of some zip files  - ones with the file extension .sea or .exe - without running a separate program.

Windows Media Player
The Windows Media Player plug-in allows you to view movie clips and listen to sound files in Windows Media format.

RealPlayer
To listen to sound files, you will need to have a program called RealPlayer installed on your computer.

Macromedia Shockwave and Flash
For animated web applications (such as moving images and video clips) you will need to download Macromedia's Shockwave Player and Flash Player.
