Eating for Health

Scotland's school meals are changing to provide children with the best possible start and to develop healthy eating habits that will help ensure a healthier life as adults.

'Hungry for Success: A Whole School Approach to School Meals in Scotland' (Scottish Executive, 2002) set out clear recommendations and minimum nutritional standards for improving school meals in Scotland.

All primary, special and secondary schools were set the target of meeting these recommendations by 2006 and funding was provided to councils to implement changes.

Funding

In autumn 2005 the then First Minister Jack McConnell announced a further £70 million to support the implementation of Hungry for Success, in particular work in food education, the promotion of school meals and to help increase the uptake of low fat milk and fruit.

The Scottish Health Promoting Schools Unit worked with a range of partners to support the implementation of Hungry for Success in Scotland's schools.

Seminars

During October and November 2005 three regional seminars, 'Hungry for Success - Next Steps', were held to support those working to implement the policy locally. More than 350 delegates came together to listen to a range of speakers, hear about examples of good practice, share experiences and plan for the future.

The 'Hungry for Success - Next Steps' seminar report gives an overview of these events.
