The Office of Fair Trading has launched a free web-based toolkit for use in Scottish secondary schools that uses everyday consumer situations, such as choosing a mobile phone or returning trainers to a shop, as contexts for developing numeracy and literacy skills.

Skilled to go develops consumer skills, knowledge and confidence. Features of the toolkit include:

  • Games, quizzes, case studies and research tasks
  • Interactive online activities, video and audio content
  • Teachers’ notes and Curriculum mapping guide

It supports delivery of Intermediate 1 and 2 Consumer studies, enterprise strands in learning and is mapped to:

  • Curriculum for Excellence
  • Standard Grade Home Economics
  • Standard Grade Social and vocational skills.

Over 50 subject coordinators for these areas from schools across Scotland will attend a free Skilled to go launch in Edinburgh on Tuesday 9 February.

Teachers can also share their experiences of using Skilled to go with their colleagues at staff or network meetings using a Cascade Skilled to go resource, which includes a PowerPoint presentation, sample hard copy activities and Skilled to go merchandise. You can order a free resource by emailing OFT your name, organisation, subject area, postal address and how you might use it.

Skilled to go is a fully adaptable resource which is free to download.
