Descriptionthumbnail image of work experience guidance document front cover

The essential purpose of an effective work experience programme is to enhance the education of young people and their understanding of the world of work. Now work experience has an increased and sharper focus within the broader interpretation of enterprise in education arising from ‘Determined to Succeed: A Review of Enterprise in Education’ (Scottish Executive, 2002), and from the implications for practice of the values, purposes and principles of ‘A Curriculum for Excellence: The Curriculum Review Group’ (Scottish Executive, 2004).

This document aims to assist teachers and professionals in schools and other establishments to build on existing achievements in the area of work experience in light these developments.

The guide describes:

  • the role and purposes of work experience
  • what makes an effective programme
  • the benefits of work experience to all those involved
  • how effective work experience is managed
  • how it fits into the curriculum
  • the practicalities of compliance
  • accreditation and certification.
