Parent: I remember when we were approached on the subject of science boxes and you did feel a bit apprehensive to start with because your initial opinion was, 'How in-depth is this going to be? Is it going to be too much for the children?'
The parents' opinion was: it was all the Bunsen burners, it was all much more advanced and what you thought science was at school. But, when we started the discussions and the topics that we were going to use, you realised it was going to be a fun thing to do.
Head of Brucehill Education and Childcare Centre: We wanted to have a complete partnership where it was parents and it was staff together. It was people working together. We were looking at children's learning, looking at how children learn in the home and in nursery.
And another thing that we were hoping was...In nursery, we are so so lucky to have the parental involvement that we do have, we see our parents on a daily basis, we communicate with them every day, children leave us and go to school. The parents have the same attitude, like, 'I really want to be involved, more than just doing the homework, the reading book...more than that.' Like, if there was an opportunity within school to be involved in their children's learning other than just the homework that goes on...And we were hoping that this kind of attitude and this feeling would spill over into school, and that was important for us.
And another way as well is, I think it's a really, really good way of parents seeing how their children learn in this sort of fun, fun way. Also, for us as a staff team it is a good way of reporting to parents. It is a good way of letting the parents know what children are involved in, in nursery.
