Using ICT to support consultation with young children - Dalry Nursery School

Three methods of collecting and recording children's views

At a staff planning meeting, it was decided that each key worker would work with their own group to evaluate the provision in the playroom. Each group decided on a different method.

One group used the digital camera to take photographs of all the areas that were available to children in the playroom. The photographs were then put into an album and discussed with the children, who were given the opportunity to discuss the provision and express their views.

Another group also used digital photographs, but they also made use of the Smart Board to display the photographs. The children could evaluate provision by drawing a happy or sad face beside each photograph displayed on the Smart Board. They could then vote on the resources they would like to play with in each area by using the 2Graph program with photographs of the resources. The resources with the most votes were made available in the area the next week.

A third group of children was given the digital camera and invited to take a photograph of any area in the nursery that they enjoyed playing in or did not enjoy playing in. The children recorded their comments using a talking tin. The photographs and the talking tins were then displayed for the parents.
