Claremont Nursery Class is a 30/30 nursery class (30 children attend in the morning, 30 in the afternoon) in Alloa, Clackmannanshire. It is staffed by a nursery teacher and two early years workers. Wendy Jelfs, the nursery teacher, last year completed the training for trainers programme as part of Early Learning Forward Thinking (the ICT Strategy for Early Years). All the nursery staff receive ongoing training in the use of ICT.
The nursery is well resourced with interactive toys, Bee-Bots, two computers and a laptop along with a video camera, Digital Movie Creator camera and two digital cameras. After the summer, they will be piloting two new types of Movie Creator camera - the new Digital Blue camera and Helmet Camera. The nursery staff and children also have access at certain times to the school computer suite and regularly make use of the interactive whiteboard and the internet. The nursery class is situated next door to Primary 1, which facilitates good links with the school, and the children regularly attend school assemblies and events.
The staff decided to make use of the children's developing skills in digital photography to make a book about the nursery. This book could be used as part of the settling-in process for children joining the nursery.
