Victoria Primary/Nursery Class in the South of Glasgow is a multicultural school with a high proportion of children whose first language was not English. Some children have poorly developed language and social skills.
For many years, Victoria has been using play as a learning and teaching style, through which to achieve many of the outcomes for environmental studies, expressive arts, maths, language, ICT and PSD.
The aim was to develop language skills (particularly talking and listening) through play and to ensure that there was a progression of these skills as the children moved from nursery through primary to P5.
The play environment was to become a literacy-rich and visually stimulating place, which would encourage language development, focusing on the correct uses of language and subject-specific vocabulary.
