Birth to Three: supporting our youngest children
Commissioned by the Scottish Executive Education Department and published by Learning and Teaching Scotland, this is guidance for anyone involved in the care and education of babies and young children.


The Child at the Centre - Self-evaluation in the early years
A national self-evaluation tool that provides the benchmark of quality provision in the early years sector. This self-evaluation guide is for centres providing pre-school education and day care to children aged 3 to 5. The guide contains performance indicators that should be of practical use. They are based on HMI performance indicators used in the inspection of centres for pre-school education purposes.


Childcare: the training challenge
This action plan sets out how the Scottish Executive intends to make additional resources available to the early years sector to help expand the workforce, to widen training opportunities, and to enhance the quality of training.

Advice and guidance on the learning and development needs of young children. Applies to centres involved in the education of children aged 3 to 5.


Guidance on Commissioning Pre-School Education Partners
Guidance document that aims to promote greater consistency in contracting and funding pre-school partners across Scotland. It aims to provide a model to meet the needs of local authorities and their partner providers.


Guidance on Involvement of Teachers in Pre-school Education
Guidance which aims to identify the contribution that trained teachers can make to pre-school education. It sets the involvement of teachers in the wider context of the staffing of early years services, the contributions made by experienced staff with other professional and vocational qualifications, and the critical importance of effective team working in early childhood education and care.


Integrated Strategy for the Early Years
This strategy aims to promote better joined-up working within the Executive and between professionals in the NHS, local authority, voluntary and private sectors. The strategy outlines ways in which the Executive proposes to reduce artificial barriers between different initiatives and to support local agencies in delivering a seamless and integrated approach to care for young children and their families.


New Community Schools
The New Community Schools initiative promotes an integrated approach to children's education, health and wellbeing. It promotes effective intervention to address barriers to children's learning and to ensure that every child has the fullest possible opportunity to maximise his or her potential. The NCS approach aims to focus the services that support children and their families from their earliest years.


Nutritional guidance for early years
Scottish Executive consultation document on 'Nutritional guidance for early years: food choices for children aged 1-5 years in early education and childcare settings'. The guidance is intended to support staff and carers by providing practical advice on food choices and menu planning based on sound evidence.

Statistics on all aspects of childcare in Scotland for 2004. This includes early years care and out of school care, with information on the demand for childcare.


Pre-school and Childcare Workforce Statistics 2004
Statistics on staff working in pre-school education and daycare centres in Scotland in September 2004. The report gives information on staff numbers, turnover and experience, demographics, qualifications and pay.


Scotland-Wide Audit of Education Authority Early Years Policies and Provision regarding Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) and Dyslexia
This report, based on research commissioned by the Scottish Executive Education Department, looked at the range of intervention strategies in education authorities across Scotland.


Working Together for Scotland
This document sets out a programme for Government (including targets) covering the provision of early support/Sure Start Scotland, free nursery places, childcare information, childcare infrastructure, childcare allowances, etc.


Working With Children – A Guide to Qualifications and Careers in Early Education, Childcare and Playwork
Provides details of the range of occupations and employment opportunities in early years education, childcare and playwork. It sets out the available, nationally recognised qualifications, showing how they can be used in moving from one role to another and building a career.
