Study of the Transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage 1

This National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) study aimed to provide an evidence base concerning the effectiveness of the transition (in England) from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage one. Researchers looked at transition practices and issues and noted the views of staff, parents and children.

One of the key findings of this research was the challenge posed by the move from a play-based approach in the Foundation Stage to a more 'structured' curriculum in Key Stage 1: children moving to Key Stage 1 expressed regret at the loss of opportunities to learn through play.
