The Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care, also known as the Care Commission, is responsible for registering all of the care services listed in the Regulation of Care (Scotland) Act 2001 and inspecting care services at least once a year (twice for services that involve 24 hour care) to ensure the standards of care meet with the requirements set out in the new Act.
It has published a booklet of questions and answers about its work.
Published in March 2002, the national care standards for childcare cover services for children and young people up to the age of 16 years which are to be regulated under the Regulation of Care(Scotland) Act 2001.
They apply equally to services operating in the public, private and voluntary sectors, and in domestic or non-domestic premises which provide service for over two hours a day and for six days or more each year.
The document contains the standards against which the Commission will regulate and inspect provision.
