The Reggio Emilia Approach to Early Years Education

Picture of The Reggio Emilia Approach to Early Years Education

In educational terms the northern Italian town of Reggio Emilia has become renowned worldwide for its forward thinking and exemplary approach to early childhood education.

This publication sets out to explain 'the Reggio approach' and outline the inherent factors. It also explores the possible translation or adaptation of aspects of this pedagogical approach to Scotland.

The original document (published in 1999) has been updated to take into account recent developments in the organisation and running of infant-toddler centres and municipal pre-schools of Reggio Emilia; the growing number of atelierista who are dance or music, rather than visual arts, specialists; parental participation; and developments in documentation. It also reflects recent curriculum developments in Scotland, in particular A Curriculum for Excellence, the Scottish Executive vision for creating a single curriculum 3-18.
