Early Years

Curriculum for Excellence

Getting involved

The four capacities of children as successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors are embedded in effective early years practice. Staff may wish to:

  • reflect on their values, purposes and principles to ensure that each of these capacities is supported within the lives and ethos of nurseries, playgroups and all early childhood settings (The Pre-school Starter Kit is designed to support this reflection and practice and policy development in implementing Curriculum for Excellence.)

  • discuss and consider how to reflect the four capacities, alongside the Curriculum Framework 3 to 5, in the planning and assessment of learning and teaching within early years contexts. It is also important that Service Improvement and Development Plans contain targets to support implementation of Curriculum for Excellence

  • become involved in the ongoing discussion and debate - if you haven’t already done so, you may wish to join the Register of Interest.
