Issuing advice to pupils

Schools will want to provide advice to pupils about safe behaviour on the internet. One form in which this might be achieved would be an easy-reference card displaying key advice points. Such information may include the following:

  • Never tell anyone whom you meet on the internet your home address, phone numbers, bank details, credit card or other personal details.
  • Never tell anyone whom you meet on the internet your school's name or phone number, unless your teacher specifically gives you permission.
  • It could be dangerous to arrange to meet anyone in person whom you first met online. The best advice is simply not to do it. Advice about why this is undesirable can be found at Chat Danger.
  • If you are in a chat room or using any electronic communication and someone says or writes something that makes you feel uncomfortable or worried, leave.
  • Never respond to nasty, suggestive or rude emails, text messages or other electronic communications. Don't send them yourself.
  • Always be yourself and do not pretend to be anyone or anything you are not.
  • Remember that if someone makes you an unbelievable offer, it probably is too good to be true!
