Acceptable use policy

All schools should have an Acceptable Use Policy to minimise risk to users and the authority. This would normally be determined at education authority level so that a consistent approach is adopted in schools. As outlined in informing parents, parents should be informed of the conditions under which access to the internet and other electronic communications is granted.

Sample policy

Monitoring the implementation of the policy is also essential. Schools should have in place procedures to ensure that all pupils and all appropriate staff are made aware of and accept their responsibilities. This will require that they know about security measures taken, including:

  • use of anti-virus software
  • filtering incoming and outgoing data.
  • monitoring or policing the use of communications technology.
