Debating in Schools

Debating encourages research and enquiry skills in children because to excel in debating it is crucial to understand and know about the issues involved in the debate. In long-preparation debates, especially, debaters need to have researched an issue thoroughly.

There are a number of sources that are useful for debaters. The school library is a good starting point and the internet, encyclopaedias, newspapers and magazines are all invaluable research tools.

Experienced competition debaters often buy or borrow an almanac. Almanacs such as the Financial Times World Desk Reference are good investments for serious debaters or can usually be borrowed from the school library.

A good piece of advice for keen debaters is to try to read a newspaper every day. If possible, reading a different newspaper every day is especially useful. Many school libraries stock a good selection of national newspapers.
