Curriculum for Excellence

Building the Curriculum 2 - Active learning in the early years

Introduction to active learning in the early years

For the first time, the pre-school sector and the early years of primary will be presented together as one level. Here we provide an overview of active learning in practice.

What do we mean by active learning?

Children learn by doing, thinking and exploring, and through quality interaction, intervention and relationships, all combining to build the four capacities for each child.

Involving parents

It is important that staff across all early years settings recognise the interests and experiences children bring from home and use these as a starting point to extend learning.

Professional development and sharing practice

At the heart of an active learning approach is the creative, adaptable professional who can develop the ideas that arise when children are immersed in their learning.
