In 2004 the Curriculum Review Group made a commitment to update, simplify and prioritise the curriculum. These draft experiences and outcomes in social studies are the fulfilment of that promise.
This paper explains some of the thinking behind the draft experiences and outcomes in social studies. It is intended to support discussion in early years centres, schools and local authorities. It provides questions to support professional reflection and engagement. Social studies include experiences and outcomes in historical, geographical, social, political, economic and business contexts.
Through social studies, children and young people develop their understanding of the world by learning about other people and their values, in different times, places and circumstances, and how their environment has been shaped. Social studies experiences and outcomes are designed to encourage links with other areas of the curriculum to provide learners with a deeper, more enjoyable and active experience.
