Development and progression in literacy and English

This material is for teachers to use alongside the experiences and outcomes in literacy and English as they plan learning and teaching.

It briefly characterises the learner’s development and progression, illustrating the key processes which contribute to this and recognising that language skills in listening and talking, reading and writing are acquired gradually and cumulatively across the curriculum levels. The spirals acknowledge the processes by which learners revisit and build upon previous learning  in order to extend and deepen their understanding and skills.

The material is intended to be a first step in describing progression and establishing shared understanding of expectations.
