Curriculum for Excellence email update September 2009

Welcome to the September 2009 Curriculum for Excellence e-update

In the first issue of the new session, we bring you up to date with the new resources available on the Curriculum for Excellence website which have been designed to support practitioners as they begin to work with the new curriculum guidance.

You may also be interested to see the Curriculum for Excellence Management Board minutes and the updated provisional framework which outlines the timetable for national planning and implementation of Curriculum for Excellence.

Experiences and outcomes

1. A new online tool called My experiences and outcomes, is now available. This allows practitioners to draw together different experiences and outcomes, allowing them to quickly and easily browse across different curriculum areas, organise their chosen outcomes into personalised groups, and to add notes and prompts to aid planning. This tool is available via Glow.

2. Glowing Thursdays offer a weekly virtual event bringing together practitioners from across Scotland to collaborate. If you have your Glow password, why not get involved?

If you would like to take part, but don’t yet have your Glow log in, you can find out what stage your local authority is with Glow as well as all the latest local Glow news by selecting your authority on our interactive map. The Glow blog is a great place to find examples of how practitioners are already using Glow to enhance their learning and teaching approaches.

3. Support for reflection, engagement and CPD is available in the form of annotated PowerPoint presentations designed to be used in CPD sessions to support familiarisation with the experiences and outcomes.

4. Following the launch of the experiences and outcomes, Learning and Teaching Scotland and the Scottish Government ran a series of nationwide events to offer support for the next stage of implementation of Curriculum for Excellence. The keynote presentation and the three workshops are available on the website, these materials can provide the groundwork for further discussion within educational establishments, for example during in-service days.

5. Further support for practitioners is now available in the following areas:

Additional support has been developed and it is anticipated that this will be published early in the autumn.

Building your curriculum

1. Developing curriculum strategies will be crucial in implementing Curriculum for Excellence. To help practitioners with this a new area has been added to the Curriculum for Excellence website, called ‘Building your curriculum’. This section offers materials to help schools and other establishments in designing curriculum structures that reflect the features set out in 'Building the Curriculum 3'. Also, Early insights show the progress some schools have been making in developing their own curriculum structures.

2. Pupil voice - three new videos have been added to the website exploring what pupils and students want from their education.

3. Find out how youth work and school partnerships are offering young people the widest range of choices and chances. A new publication, Bridging the Gap: Improving Outcomes for Scotland’s Young People through School and Youth Work Partnerships is now available on the Curriculum for Excellence website along with case studies that show youth work in action.
