Got a question about the galaxies, then check here first to see if it has already been answered.
Are there other galaxies and how do you get to them?
No one knows for sure how many galaxies there are in the our universe, but there are many. Our galaxy is called the Milky Way and it has between 100,000 million and 200,000 million stars. It may seem a lot but it is not the biggest one at all. No human being has gone as far as to reach the end of the galaxy, in fact the furthest we have been is right up on the moon. We need much better technology than the one we have at present to be able to afford reaching other galaxies or even get to the edge of our own. Unfortunately this is not possible at present.
How many miles away is the Milky way and how do you get there?
The Milky Way is our home galaxy, we are already in it. The place where we live is in a little corner at the end of the Milky Way.
The Milky Way is about 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 km (about 100,000 light years or about 30 kpc) across. The Sun does not lie near the centre of our galaxy, it lies about 8 kpc from the centre on what is known as the Sagittarius arm of the Milky Way.
