Week 6 - All about the Sun

You are now in the final week of your mission and you will find out about gravity and weight in space and on planet Earth. You will also find out about the Sun and the role it plays in our solar system.

the sun.jpgThe Sun is the most prominent feature in our solar system and temperatures at the centre of the sun reach 15,000,000°. The Sun is a lot larger than planet Earth.

Q. How many Earths do you think will fit inside the Sun?

The last solar eclipse of the sun was in 29 March 2006 and the next one will be on 1 August 2008.

We found a really cool site which let us work out what we'd weigh on other planets because of the differences in gravity.

We learned that in space any liquids don't pour out like normal they turn into little spheres. Also they have to strap thier feet to the ground when they're doing the toilet.

We found out  about what your age would be on other planets. The further away the planet was the longer it takes to orbit the sun so that means the years are longer. On Saturn we would be less than one year old.

Last week we learnd that gravity holds all nine planets together with out crashing in to each other, and keeps them orbiting around the sun in the same way.

I found out that water or any liquid in space doesn't flow like it would normally do but instead it floats about in balls.
The bigger the planet and more density it has the more gravity it will have. The sun keeps all the planets in the same orbit because of the force of the sun's gravity. The gravity pulls everything to the centre from all directions.

We found out that if you change the speed of a planet's orbit the planet moves towards or further away from the sun.  If planets moved too close to the sun it would blow up.

If the sun is removed the planet will go away too.

We enjoyed the quiz too - we all got at least 8 out of 10.
