This glossary explains terms used in CPD - Continuing Professional Development. It is not intended to be exhaustive in educational terms, nor does it include an explanation of every word used in the case study extracts. Instead, it seeks to clarify meanings in order to remove potential barriers to understanding and help the reader to appreciate the messages intended more fully.

QIOQuality Improvement Officer, employed by local authority education services to help raise achievement and manage improvement.
QuACD (Qualifications, Assessment and Curriculum Division)A division of SEED.
Quality assurance (of assessment)A means of confirming the extent to which intended outcomes have been fulfilled. Local moderation/sharing the standard activities can support the quality assurance process where it relates to professional judgement of predefined criteria and is intended to ensure consistency within or across departments, establishments and authorities. Quality assurance is intended to lead to improvement. The Scottish Survey of Achievement (SSA) and international studies provide quality assurance at a national and international level.
Questioning techniquesBlack and Wiliam highlight the need for improved questioning to encourage development of pupils' higher-order cognitive skills. Advice includes structuring higher-order and lower-order questions, and allowing wait time.
