This glossary explains terms used in CPD - Continuing Professional Development. It is not intended to be exhaustive in educational terms, nor does it include an explanation of every word used in the case study extracts. | JANET | JANET is the UK's education and research network. It connects the UK's education and research organisations to each other, as well as to the rest of the world through links to the global internet. In addition, JANET includes a separate network that is available to the community for experimental activities in network development. The JANET network connects UK universities, FE colleges, research councils, specialist colleges and adult and community learning providers. It also provides connections between the Regional Broadband Consortia to facilitate the DfES initiative for a national schools' network. | JEGS (Job Evaluation and Grading Support) | JEGS is a job evaluation system which has been developed specifically for use in the Civil Service and is widely used in other public bodies both in Scotland (e.g. LT Scotland) and other parts of the UK. JEGS enables jobs to be measured against seven common factors: knowledge and skills; contacts and communication; problem solving; decision making; autonomy; management of resources; and impact. Job evaluation looks at and measures the demands and quality of jobs. It does not look at loading or the performance of postholders and is not concerned with whether work should or should not be carried out. |
| Jigsawing | A co-operative learning strategy that structures positive interdependence among pupils in a class. Different groups or individual pupils work on different aspects of a learning task or research project, perhaps using different resources. They are expected to know their part of the work well enough to teach it to others. The pooled learning then constitutes a totality to which the different groups or individual pupils have contributed separate elements. |
| Jot time/jotting time | Where pupils are given time to think of an answer and to note their thoughts before speaking. |
| Journals | Diaries kept by pupils or teachers for recording critical incidents, with a specific emphasis on reflection. Certain types of journal can also be known as learning logs. AifL has promoted collaborative communities of enquiry. Reflective diaries are encouraged as part of this approach. |
| Jpeg | Joint Photographic Expert Group. A file format for images. The file size is reduced as a JPEG. |
