Profile of Alan Coady

I'm a guitar instructor at East Lothian Council.

On my own blog I write about:

  • instrumental instruction,
  • teaching/learning in general,
  • music,
  • technology in music education,
  • matters loosely related to the job e.g. developments/findings in areas of mind/brain/memory/language/perception etc,
  • music/cultural events (flagging up or reviewing),
  • occasional obituaries,
  • tangential vistas offered by striving for a heightened sense of connectedness,
  • links to online resources e.g. YouTube, BBC Radio Listen Again resources, websites etc.

I hope that in Scottish education over the next five years we see one or two hours per week of free, continuing learning for mixed classes of pupils and  staff with a view to keeping the mind and body as alive as possible.

For example, languages; sports; information and communications technology ; media; psychology; self-defence; philosophy; creative writing; typing; speed-reading; physical and mental health; first aid; team building; reporting/writing/editing skills; outdoor skills/navigation; appreciation of various arts etc. I

Imagine the result of that and - throughout a career of, say, 35 years -  the areas you could cover. These are the kind of people you'd want as your teachers. In addition to that, the cohesive effect of combined learning between pupils and staff would surely benefit everybody.
