Petrol and diesel have been getting cleaner over the years and vehicles using these fuels now emit less harmful gases than before. Emissions from petrol and diesel engines have also been reduced over the last ten years because of European laws to improve engine technology, and will continue to be reduced in the future.
However, there has been less progress in reducing emissions of greenhouse gases than there has been in reducing emissions of toxic pollutants from road vehicles that use petrol and diesel.
Battery power drives electric vehicles. They produce no direct emissions and are very quiet. Emissions can be produced from burning fossil fuels to supply the electricity to charge the battery but the effect of this can be reduced by generating power from renewable energy sources such as wind power. Electric cars are not suitable for long distance travel and are more suitable for short journeys and for local delivery vehicles like milk floats.
