Insulation

Insulation helps reduce energy wastage from our homes. If you think of the walls of our houses having an outside and an inside layer, insulation is like a blanket that you can use to wrap round the house - outside, through the middle or inside the walls, to keep warmth in. We can use different materials to insulate our homes. Some materials are better than others.

Insulation is generally a material with very low bulk (this is also known as low density). Only small amounts are needed to provide high levels of insulation.

Low density mineral wool, expanded polystyrene, corkboard and recycled paper are all good insulation materials due to the small amounts of energy required to make them. Lower density mineral wools should be used in preference to denser mineral wools where possible as the environmental impact increases roughly in proportion to their weight increases.
