What threatens biodiversity?

Many human activities have a negative effect upon our biodiversity. Each time we change the natural environment we change the environment that biodiversity lives in. Levels of greenhouse gases (such as carbon dioxide and methane) in the atmosphere are rising because we use more energy and drive more cars. This is changing Scotland's climate and increasing the probability of extreme weather events (e.g. storms, gales, flooding) occuring more frequently.

Plants and animals live in certain climatic conditions, preferring certain temperatures and a certain amount of rain. If these amounts change the species may not survive in that area. Some species are more vulnerable to these changes than others. You can find out more information about some species in Scotland in the interactive map in the games area of this website.
