The key concepts for education for sustainable development are: interdependence, citizenship, and stewardship; the needs and rights of future generations; diversity; quality of life; sustainable change; care and caution. Raising awareness about climate change is central to each one of these concepts.
Educating about climate change can help improve our awareness and develop the skills and attitudes needed to question the way we think, the values we hold and the decisions we make in the context of sustainable development. Improving awareness about environmental concerns such as the control of greenhouse gases, land and energy use, pollution and transport all have direct connections to educating for sustainable development.
Specific initiatives and what local authorities are doing to promote and implement sustainable development across Scotland, including Local Agenda 21 and Biodiversity strategies, are covered in the website.
