James Hamilton Academy: Values education

Stage 9

Values linked to behaviours to be discussed and added to at social education lessons by pupils. Behaviours were also discussed at the discipline policy committee and the next step is to produce a learners' and teachers' charter for rights and responsibilities based on the values and behaviours. A set of four posters is being commissioned for every classroom.

Stage 10

Focus on one value each week and go through all four each month to deepen the learning and change the behaviour.

Stage 11

Values Awards at school. These will be for pupils, all staff and even parents for their ‘valued’ contributions. What gets rewarded gets repeated, and the awards will be crucially judged by a panel of school staff, pupils and parents.

Final aims

Final aims are to see the values being lived through:

  • learning and teaching, and
  • behaviours in and around the school

and celebrated through:

  • a notice board for the values
  • key words being displayed in every classroom and in the assembly hall
  • one value being taken each month at assembly
  • pupils/staff/parents/community members leading or taking part in assemblies
  • social education lessons looking at the subset words of key values
  • values informing every classroom and every interaction between people in school
  • values lessons being written into the personal and social education programme.
