Citizenship

Planning education for citizenship: Longforgan Primary School

Longforgan Primary School is a rural school in Perth and Kinross.

As part of its school development plan it highlighted a need for a more structured approach to teaching citizenship.

Developing topics for the Citizenship programme

Programme topics were chosen as a result of consultation with the headteacher, staff, pupils and parents. Topics were taken from the school’s existing RME, PSD, Health and Environmental Studies programmes. New initiatives and curricular areas were also developed.

To avoid duplication, the school devised a programme of study from nursery to P7. It developed a variety of key areas and suggested activities and resources. The programme is still under development but initial feedback from staff is very positive.

Three main strands of development

Longforgan developed three key strands for their programme, as detailed below. The plans show progression across a number of year groups and suggest assessment outcomes, key learning activities and resources. It was trialled at the start of the school year in August 2004, to be reviewed at the end of the year, June 2005.
