Learning and Teaching Scotland

The Global Dimension in the Curriculum

This new publication from Learning and Teaching Scotland provides revised advice for Scottish schools and early education settings in developing the global dimension. The publication was developed by LTS in association with the Department for International Development. The publication is consistent with the values and purposes of Curriculum for Excellence, and fully supportive of it. It is also consistent with the Scottish Executive’s strategy for international education.

The purpose of the publication is to explain why the global dimension is central to the education of young people, and what it might look like when it is embedded in the curriculum, ethos and values of a school. The global dimension recognises that we now live in an interdependent global society. It incorporates key concepts of human rights, diversity, conflict resolution, social justice, interdependence and sustainable development in international contexts.

The advice should be used in conjunction with the two accompanying documents:

  • the Practitioner Resource, which provides more detailed recommendations on how schools can develop effective classroom and whole school practice
  • Case Studies, which demonstrate a range of effective practice in Scottish schools and early education settings.

The three documents have been designed to provide a comprehensive toolkit for reflection, self-evaluation and professional development. The publication will be distributed to all schools.

G8 Watch for Schools

Jubilee Scotland will be running the G8 Watch for Schools programme in the run-up to the G8 summit in Germany this summer. The year 2007 could be another big milestone in the fight against poverty. It will be two years since the G8 leaders were called on to Make Poverty History. This year, the G8 Summit is back in the news, and poverty is back on the agenda.

But who exactly are the G8 and what do they do? What has happened since 2005 and the Make Poverty History campaign? And what can young people do to influence their decisions?

G8 Watch for Schools addresses all these questions. Jubilee Scotland can provide your school with a free resource on 'The G8 and Global Governance', and other opportunities to find out more about the G8.
