Resources

Free citizenship resources
Watch out for news about free resources in the next bulletin. We are clearing out our cupboards again and will have a wide variety of teaching resources, both new and old, to give away on a first-come, first-served basis.

Wee Positive Images resource from the British Red Cross
The British Red Cross has launched its Wee Positive Images resource. It has been designed for Primary 5 and 6 pupils and introduces some key issues and experiences faced by asylum seekers and refugees. Using a creative, interactive approach, the toolkit focuses on empathy building and fostering understanding to promote global awareness and active citizenship. It is available on the British Red Cross website.

Through My Eyes - stories of identity and belonging
The Imperial War Museum's programme Their Past Your Future has launched a new online exhibition, Through My Eyes. The exhibition tells the stories of people whose lives have been affected by conflict, directly changing or challenging their sense of identity and belonging. Stories explored include the Basque children's evacuation from the Spanish Civil War, those who left India during Partition and those, like Sam Martinez from Belize, who volunteered to serve in Britain during the Second World War and stayed once the war was over. Read all the stories on the Through My Eyes website.

Amnesty International teaching resources on China
Amnesty International has launched some new teaching resources specifically for Curriculum for Excellence including a new teaching resource on China. Most of the resources are available in English and in Gaelic and are primarily aimed at 11-16-year-olds. Access them on the Teaching Resources for Scotland page of the Amnesty International website.

Global citizenship posters, free from SCIAF
SCIAF has produced a series of vibrant posters for the classroom illustrating ideas around global citizenship. The posters are available in English and Gaelic and free sets can be ordered directly from SCIAF. Email sciaf@sciaf.org.uk or telephone 0141 354 5555. Alternatively, download copies from the global citizenship images page of the website.

The youth section of the SCIAF website is full of information and resources. Have a look at SCIAF Youth.

Football Against Racism in the European Union (FARE)
This website is available in English, French, German and Italian. It aims to combine the resources of anti-racist football organisations throughout Europe, to share good practice and present a united front against racism in football. Full of information about events around Europe, this site would be as useful in a language class as it would be in a programme of work on anti-racism. Visit FARE for more ideas.

Thread - eco-fabulous style from the BBC
This website from the BBC is an online fashion magazine dedicated to ethical fashion. The site gives information about recycling, making and trading sustainably and the use of sustainable materials in fashion. Also available on the site are clips from the BBC Three series, 'Blood, Sweat and T-shirts', where six young fashion addicts swapped shopping on the high street for working in India's cotton fields and clothing factories. Visit Thread for more ethical fashion teaching ideas.

Global citizenship resource from Mercy Corps
Mercy Corps has produced a new guide called 'Introducing Global Citizenship: essential guidance and resources for secondary schools'. Developed by teachers for teachers, the first part of the resource looks at the key elements of global citizenship, illustrates some good practice and suggests innovative ways to approach global citizenship in schools. The second part provides details of online resources and books covering 15 different subject areas. The guide is available from Mercy Corps, telephone 0131 558 8244 or email info@ukmercycorps.org.uk.

New sustainable development publications available

Opportunities

Join the National Conversation and discuss Scotland's future
Young Scot, the national youth information agency, is working with the Scottish Government to consult with the nation's young people about Scotland's future. In line with the wider consultation being delivered across the country, Young Scot will canvas the views of 11-19-year-olds throughout Scotland on their hopes for the political status of the nation. Young Scot's work with young people is based on two elements: a national survey and local 'Youth Investigation Teams', culminating in a report and national 'discussion day' event attended by young people and key policy and decision makers. The national survey is being delivered online on the Young Scot National Conversation page and offline using the Young Scot InfoMobile Trailers which will tour the country. If you work with a group of young people who you think would benefit from working with the Young Scot team to discuss the issues raised by the consultation then please contact Alison Hardie on 0131 313 2488 or email alisonh@youngscot.org.

Scottish secondary schools are being invited to submit storyboards on the theme of climate change for a national film-making competition this autumn. Shortlisted schools will have the opportunity to display their storyboards in a national exhibition. One lucky school will be selected to work with a specialist technical team of industry professionals to transform their storyboard into a real animated film. Visit the Christian Aid website for more information on the Cool it! competition and to download a briefing pack.
