2007/2008 Speaking competition for S3 pupils

This year's speaking competition, sponsored by the European Parliament, is under way, with a fantastic prize on offer to inspire young speakers from around Scotland. Up for grabs is an all-expenses-paid trip to Brussels, for the winning team and their teacher, to visit the European Parliament and European Commission. Heats are being held in 10 local authority areas between January and May and the national final will be held in Edinburgh in June.

The competition is open to novice speakers only - pupils who have represented their school at an external speaking or debating competition are not eligible. Teams should be made up of two pupils and each team must prepare and deliver an introduction and talk lasting eight minutes, plus a summing-up lasting two minutes.

Every year the competition is based on a different topic. This year's topic is Diversity in Europe. Each team must choose one of the 27 member states of the European Union and talk on one of the following themes:

  • Being a migrant in...
  • Being a member of a religious minority in...
  • Being a member of a minority community in...

Heats are organised by the Local Authority and schools must enter via their local authority co-ordinator. For details of your co-ordinator please go to our International Education site or contact:
