Physical education provides a unique context to develop the four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence. It is the only educational experience where the focus in on the body, its movement and physical development. It helps young people to value and respect their own bodies and abilities and those of others. It offers opportunities for development of physical competence, creative expression, personal and social skills development, fitness and a healthy lifestyle. It equips pupils with the experiences to make informed choices about their ongoing physically active lifestyles and it is essential for the growth and development of children at all stages of their lives.
The subject offers knowledge and understanding of the rights and responsibilities needed by young people to engage in sports and team games. They learn why rules are important and how to interpret rules and deal with disputes. The skills needed to investigate issues, to plan events and to contribute to the organisation of sporting events are also important. Values are associated with fairness and the ability to distinguish between good and bad behaviour in sport, and creative skills can be enhanced and demonstrated through a range of physical activities.
The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority provide a wide variety of case studies from English schools about innovative ways of using P.E. and school sport to improve schools.
